Every guy’s nightmare is the dreaded friend zone, that point when he’s been hanging out with a girl he really likes and he reveals his true emotions, only to be met with the gut-wrenching phrase, “Ooh… That’s flattering, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship.” Guys have found themselves plagued by this for centuries (possibly), so it’s no wonder that Hollywood has cashed in on their suffering with movies like No Strings Attached, which comes out this week. Well, the friend zone won’t be going away any time soon, so we thought it would be a good idea to count down the top 10 movies about friends falling in love. Guys can learn a little something from these movies, and girls… Well, you know you love them.
10. Just Friends- Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart star in this oddball comedy about how painful it can be for a guy to be friends with a girl in high school. Reynolds’ character has the best intentions at heart, which only get him as far as the dreaded friend zone. Years later, the two meet up again, and Reynolds decides to go for the gold one more time. Of course, hilarity ensues in the form of a psychotic stalker who also happens to be a pop star, in the form Anna Farris.
9. 13 Going on 30- Things can be complicated when you’re a teen. Unfortunately, they aren’t much easier at 30. Jennifer Garner stars in a lady’s version of the movie Big, which follows a girl who wakes up in the future as an adult. The thing is, she doesn’t like what she’s become, and the only person she feels comfortable around is her childhood friend Mark Ruffalo, who she apparently tortured while growing up. I feel fairly confident in my assumption that ladies love this movie, much to the chagrin of their boyfriends.
8. Reality Bites- This film focuses on a hodgepodge of roommates struggling with life after college. It’s full of interesting characters, but for our list, we only care about Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke, two complete opposites who, of course, fall in love with each other. Ben Stiller directs and also stars in this film as a catalyst that drives the two friends together. It’s a bizarre relationship from beginning to end, and it’s one that seems doomed in the long run, but the other roommates manage to distract us from thinking too much about it.
7. Keeping the Faith- So, a priest and a rabbi fall in love with Jenna Elfman… Childhood friends played by Ben Stiller and Edward Norton, who both happen to be men of their respective faiths, find themselves reunited with their third musketeer years after she was forced to move away. Both men find themselves falling in love, despite religious complications that prevent them from really going after her. Once again, their awkward friendships result in all sorts of humorous complications and create a number of mistunderstandings.
