This week, we decided to take a look at a subject that’s close to our hearts here at Stars & Popcorn: nerds. Now, no matter how many times some of our writers have fervently denied that they are “nerds,” I always like to remind them that they pretty much watch movies full-time. It’s not a bad thing, though. Real life-nerds aren’t anywhere near as awful as The Big Bang Theory makes them out to be (I personally think that show is the equivalent of blackface for nerds). Sure, some of us might have been shoved into lockers back in high school, but one day we’re going to have enough power to buy and sell the families of those who tormented us. After all, it’s a pretty well-known fact that nerds rule the world.
In honor of our broken-glasses-wearing, asthma-inflicted, pocket-protector-sporting overlords, we wanted to count down our favorite incarnations to hit the silver screen. Special note: I’m only counting movie nerds that we found bearable, so sorry in advance to Napoleon Dynamite. [Editor's note: Napoleon Dynamite was incredible. That doesn't mean I'm happy about the cartoon series.] With that in mind, we present our top 10 favorite movie nerds.
10. Hermione Granger (the Harry Potter series)- We’re starting this list off right with a lady nerd. Now, I know that all the guy nerds out there think that these are rare and whimsical creatures (female nerds, not wizards), but I can assure you that nerdettes are everywhere. They just happen to be a little harder to spot than their male counterparts (you know, because they bathe and everything). Emma Watson played a booksmart wizard who, while annoying at times, proved to have the resourcefulness to help take on “He who shall not be named.” There might be a writer or two around the office who developed a slight crush on her over the years, which only helped her chances of getting on this list. So, even though she might be busy telling everyone how stupid they are, she’s easy on the eyes, which makes her the perfect nerd to kick things off.
9. Garth Algar (the Wayne’s World series)- Who said nerds don’t know how to party? Dana Carvey plays the second half of the famous hosts from the public access series Wayne’s World, and trust me when me when I say he’s about as nerdy as they come. Now, the term “nerd” covers a wide variety of social outcasts, so Garth isn’t exactly the sharpest crayon in the box… Or something like that. Still, he’s an endearing little guy and someone I’d certainly want to have in my corner. His love of music, pop culture and licorice makes him a perfect addition to the list, lounging comfortably at the No. 9 spot. Party on, Garth.
