In Hollywood, there’s the good, the bad and the ugly. But what about those actors and actresses that fall between the cracks? Those noble few who constantly make movies in spite of the fact that you just can’t decide whether you like them or they really suck. Well, we decided to devote this week to […]

While filmmakers spend the next two months patting each other on the back for a job well done and a ticket well sold, those of us accustomed to the solemn pitch of the theater and the sweet, sweet odor of artificial butter have already shrugged off the spectacles of yesterday. Eyes always on the next […]

Oblivion

Star Wars meets Inception. And it works. Unfamiliar machines rule the earth; they suffocate it, running it dry. With sparse resources and even fewer companions, a man stands at the center: curious. Insubordinate. You can just hear the clichés coming: “One man… blah blah… to save the world.” And Director Joseph Kosinski is counting on it. He wants you to bank on familiarity. He smirks as you roll your eyes at his trailer. He’s got you.

So Dead Space 3’s finally out, and yeah, it’s kind of a big deal. Since Resident Evil has basically fallen off of the boat that is “survival horror” (both in their film and video game franchises), it’s been up to Electronic Arts and Visceral Games to maintain the mantle. And to bloody it up a bit, of course.

Have you ever sat down to watch a movie or TV show and absent-mindedly read the opening credits, only to see a familiar name flash across the screen? “That’s funny,” you say. “I recognize that name from my secret fetish porn collection, but what’s she doing in a Disney movie?” It’s as if people in […]

Sure, there’s a paradox or two, but on the other hand, who died and made you a physicist? I’m just going to come out and say it: Looper is everything I love about movies. It’s a thought-provoking film that offers a new take on universal themes. Oh, and mind-bending time loops. Looper was one of […]

Something wicked this way comes. Tom Hardy is perhaps one of the most promising rising stars in Hollywood today, with films like Inception and most recently, Warrior, under his belt. The future looks bright for the English actor. However, it’s the short-lived television series The Take that might be the best insight into why the […]

We live in a sentimental culture, constantly looking backward: We study history, we value records, we have holidays based strictly on remembrance. And here we are during a time in which we try to sum up the last year with best-of lists and retrospectives. But we at Stars & Popcorn, ever-innovative as we are, have […]

Touch gloves and come out teary-eyed!: Men out there love sports, and perhaps to a greater extent they love sports movies. There’s just something about proving one’s worth through physical perseverance and force of will that appeals to the animal part of a male’s brain, the part that lingers from when we were still beating each other with clubs to assert dominance. [...]

Who needs reality?: Director Zach Snyder is quickly establishing himself as a unique sort of auteur in today’s film industry. His films all have a unique look and feel to them, one that fits in nicely with the escapist spectacle that audiences seem to be seeking more and more. Sucker Punch meshes well into his filmography, not because it’s his best film as far as story or performances are concerned—in fact, there are a number of turn-offs when it comes to the artistic merit of this movie. But it is because of its breathtaking visual achievements that this film embodies the very ideal of our popcorn rating. [...]

With Sucker Punch premiering this week, we thought that we would go back and pay homage to some of our favorite films that feature alternate realities. That is, we thought that we were going to do that until we realized just how many films technically featured alternate realities. So, we decided to come up with a very important rule for our list: Characters must move between “reality” and the “alternate reality.” It doesn’t really matter how they do it, but we have to see at least two separate realities in the film. With that, we managed to compile a list of the top 10 movies with alternate realities. We hope you can enjoy… Knowing that it may not actually exist! [...]
