Marvel ups the stakes, but not the quality, with The Winter Soldier. I’m disappointed in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After all the hype and rumors that have been swirling around the internet, I was expecting a film that would raise the stakes after The Avengers. Don’t get me wrong: This film offered up a […]

Can you believe that the Beastie Boys song didn’t even play once? All right, by now it’s not news that Arnold Schwarzenegger is back, just like he told us he would be, and it would seem his on the war path to make up for lost time. His most recent film, Sabotage, showed tremendous potential, […]

The six-year wait might have been worth it. Before I get started, I should admit that I was a huge fan of the Veronica Mars series, even though I started watching it after it had already been canceled. So when I heard that they were making a movie to continue the story of the teenage […]

These Greeks used all their Olive Oil on their abs. Let me get something straight right from the get-go: I did not like the first 300 film. Sure, it had its fair share of cool visual moments, but for the most part, I felt like it was spectacle for spectacle’s sake. So, for those of […]

It’s definitely a sturdy film. Let’s just cut to the chase. Go and see The Lego Movie. Doesn’t matter if you have kids or not; this is a movie that everyone can enjoy. And if you do have kids, then you won’t look like a creep sitting alone in the dark. Honestly, I think The […]

The only thing that would have made it worse would have been if they sparkled. The tagline for Vampire Academy reads “They suck at school,” which I find ironic, because apparently it sucks at being a movie too. The film jumps on the current trend of injecting high school drama into a supernatural setting (see […]

I wouldn’t go and see it. Yes, I’m one of those terrible people that was actually excited to see I, Frankenstein. I was a fan of the Underworld series (even though the movies were admittedly pretty awful), and I had a bit of faith in Kevin Grevioux (who helped come up with the story) to […]

Geopolitical intrigue and world financial crisis? Count me in. January is a strange month in the movie cycle, and not in a good way. Usually, it’s filled with overwrought dramas not good enough for awards contention, cheesy horror movies not good enough for October releases, and terrible cash-grab comedies whose only purpose is to nab […]

War. Huh. What is it good for? The nature of war has changed over the years, and thus so has the nature of the war movie genre. War as an institution has gone from being glamorized in film to being used as an explicit reminder of just how brutal and violent the experiences the men […]

They will tell legends one day of how awful this movie was. Well, 2014 is off to a rocky start with The Legend of Hercules, which is arguably one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in theaters. The film is an absolute joke, and not a good one. Let’s just put it this way: […]

Finally, my Rocky-Raging Bull crossover fan fiction doesn’t seem so stupid.

I’ve noticed a trend lately in Hollywood. We’re reaching a point where many of our finest actors who first came to fame in the late ‘60s through the early ‘80s are getting older. Meanwhile, Hollywood is making movies more and more where the dollar value is the end game. The most well-known and successful example of this is The Expendables, the third installment is due later this year. Say what you will, but nostalgia sells.

[Editor's note: This article features the thoughts of Daniel Watkins, a graduate of the UCF Film School, on the film American Hustle. Dan currently lives and works in Los Angeles.] American Hustle is about the small time wheelers and dealers that typically exist in the background of these types of genre exercises. In the cinema […]
