Oct. 4 Gravity Director: Alfonso Cuarón Starring: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney and Ed Harris Our Take: The first time I saw the trailer for this movie, it was 30 feet tall and in 3D. I’ve never felt so anxious in my entire life. For me, Gravity looks like a panic attack just waiting to happen, […]

Sept. 6 Riddick Director: David Twohy Starring: Vin Diesel, Karl Urban and Dave Bautista Our Take: Pitch Black is still one of my favorite science fiction movies of the new millennium, and it’s going to be great to see Vin Diesel getting back to basics with an R-rated sequel to the epic original. (Remember how […]

Aug. 2 2 Guns Director: Baltasar Kormákur Starring: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg and Bill Paxton Our Take: The year of comic book movies continues with this film that no one even knew was based on a graphic novel. Of course, that isn’t saying much, since a lot of beloved movies were based on comics. I’m […]

July 5 The Lone Ranger Director: Gore Verbinski Starring: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer and William Fichtner Our Take: This film hasn’t made much of an impression on us at Stars & Popcorn. I honestly can’t remember any of us even having a conversation about it. Johnny Deep has teamed up with the director that revitalized […]

The Internship

Director: Shawn Levy

Starring: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Rose Byrne

Our Take: So Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are reuniting to make a zany, R-rated comedy. Not a bad formula. Sadly Vaughn’s career has been on the decline over the last few years. I would say that that wary excitement is the best way to describe this film. It looks good, but I’ve been hurt before by Mr. Vaughn. I’m just not sure if the lighting that was Wedding Crashers can be captured again.

April 5 Evil Dead Director: Fede Alvarez Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Jessica Lucas Our Take: Nothing has made me feel quite as uncomfortable as the Evil Dead trailer in a long, long time. It’s not that it looks like a bad movie; it just looks like a movie I’ll scream through right until […]

March 1 Jack the Giant Slayer Director: Bryan Singer Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci Our Take: After last month’s Warm Bodies, I’m willing to give Nicholas Hoult the benefit of the doubt on anything, especially when that other thing pairs him with notable thespians Stanley Tucci and Ewan McGregor. Toss in the […]

February 1 Warm Bodies Director: Jonathan Levine Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer and John Malkovich Our Take: It’s shaping up to be a big year for Nicholas Hoult, and I couldn’t be happier seeing the Skins star getting the big screen treatment. In March, he’s got Jack the Giant Slayer, which also looks good, but […]

In early January of 2012, the Stars & Popcorn brain trust got together for a little old-fashioned prognosticatin’. Three of us – Joseph Hunter, Patrick Sessoms and James M. – peered into the company crystal ball to take a look at the following 12 months’ worth of moving pictures, and we attempted to predict the […]

January 4 Texas Chainsaw 3D Director: John Luessenhop Starring: Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde and Scott Eastwood Our Take: Since we started Stars & Popcorn, we’ve noticed that with the New Year comes an awful horror movie in the first week of January. Well folks, this is that awful horror movie. It stars no one of […]

December 7 Hyde Park on Hudson Director: Roger Michell Starring: Bill Murray, Laura Linney, Olivia Williams Our Take: Bill Murray is taking on a serious, dramatic role? The world just might explode. I’ve always been one to say that comedians tend to make the best dramatic actors, and this time around, we get to see […]
