Because Not All Great Movies Are Good!

What Comes After Blockbuster Season?

Well, the summer blockbuster season is coming to an end, which means Oscar season is about to get into full swing. We at Stars & Popcorn pride ourselves on knowing that not all great movies are good, and while we’re excited to see Hollywood trot out its show ponies in an attempt to bring home that little gold statue, we have noticed a distinct lack of explosions in theaters during the last one-third of the year.

Fear not, though, because there are always a few popcorn movies in the mix, and we decided to take a look ahead and come up with list of some of the most promising action-packed movies that don’t give a damn about the Academy or its stupid award. So, action fans, go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief, because 2013 has a few fun movies left in it. Here are 10 that should be worth the price of admission.

SEPTEMBER

Long live Vin Diesel!

Riddick- I’m going to stick with my guns and say that Pitch Black was one of the better science fiction movies I’ve seen over the years. Of course, Chronicles of Riddick was… Well, it was a movie. The big news for fans of the franchise is that Riddick is returning in the self-titled third installment of the series, and this time, the producers decided to go with a hard R-rating. That means its back to basics for the most dangerous man in the universe, and I couldn’t be happier.

Insidious: Chapter 2- Normally I would be filled with ambivalence toward a movie like this, but director James Wan knocked it out of the park with The Conjuring, which means that this might actually be something to get excited about. While it probably won’t feature too many explosions, if Chapter 2 is half as good as Wan’s last film, this will be well worth the sleepless nights that are bound to result from it.

OCTOBER

Let’s hope Machete Kills in Space will happen too.

Machete Kills- Robert Rodriguez is one of my favorite directors in Hollywood, not just because he makes awesome, fun movies, but also because he just doesn’t seem to give a damn any more. He really is a rebel with a camera. He does what he wants, when he wants. Machete was one of the first movies I got to review for Stars & Popcorn, so the sequel to that epic Mexploitation flick is stirring up plenty of excitement for me, and I can’t wait to see how they top the first one.

Carrie- I have to admit I’m pretty excited for this Stephen King-inspired remake, especially since the first Carrie was one of the best movies based on his books. Not only that, but it stars the lead of Kick-Ass and Let Me In, Chloë Grace Moretz, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite young starlets. Overall, its looks like it’s got a strong cast, a capable director and an awesome story. So, the only question is, will you be brave enough to see it alone?

Escape Plan- Two of the biggest names in Hollywood are teaming up for a movie about trying to escape from an inescapable prison. Schwarzenegger is making his return to the big screen, and with how fun his last performance was, I’m excited to see the big guy teaming up with his counterpart, Sylvester Stallone. As if those two weren’t enough, Person of Interest‘s Jim Caviezel is playing the villain. It looks like it should be a pretty solid action flick, and with the star power it’s packing, this is a movie I don’t want to miss.

NOVEMBER

It’s hammer time! … Sorry about that.

Thor: The Dark World- Comic book movies are a big business, and the nerd in me loves it. While I’ve never been much of a Thor fan, Chris Hemsworth has slowly been winning me over since The Avengers. So far, the trailers make it look like this is going to be an action-packed epic with plenty of fight scenes, and there is news of recent reshoots to feature more Tom Hiddleston, which is always a good thing. While the first film left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, this one looks like it’s going to be everything we want from a Thor film.

DECEMBER

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug- Peter Jackson is wasting no time with his new trilogy, and the sequel to his latest epic is already coming to theaters. While the first installment was a tremendous success, it looks like it was only a small glimpse of the overall world these films are going to be exploring. I’ve never been a huge Tolkien fan, but I have to admit I’m pretty excited to see the characters returning to the big screen, and I’m sure this is going to have plenty of emotional moments as the story starts to get darker and darker.

Respect the ‘stache.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues- Anchorman was a cult hit overnight, and to this day, guys still quote it as often as they can. Anchorman: The Legend Continues looks like it’s going to have everything we loved about the first one and then some. With people like Harrison Ford and Jim Carrey joining the cast, The Legend Continues is poised to be bigger and possibly even better than the first one. Let’s just hope Adam McKay won’t let his rabid fans down.
